Alamo City Smoke Circuit (San Antonio, New Braunfels)

About this Trail

This circuit runs along the seam where San Antonio’s old roots meet the Hill Country’s river towns. You can spend a morning near the missions and still be in New Braunfels by lunch. From there, Seguin and the small communities around Loop 1604 and Highway 90 turn it into a true loop, not just a straight shot up I 35.

The flavors track the geography. In San Antonio, barbecue sits close to Tex Mex and South Texas comfort food. You will feel that in the way people order and what they reach for on the side. The smoke stays Central Texas, but the table has more heat and more spice in the background.

New Braunfels brings a different layer. The city was founded in 1845 by Prince Carl of Solms Braunfels, part of the German immigration story that shaped a lot of this corridor. Meat markets and sausage culture still make sense here. It is one reason this area stays so strong on links, ribs, and anything you want to slice thick.

The highlights give you clean anchors. 2M Smokehouse in San Antonio is the city’s modern standard, a place where the craft is tight and the crowd knows what it wants. Reese Bros Barbecue in San Antonio shows the newer wave, built for repeat visits and steady lines. Curry Boys BBQ in San Antonio leans into the city’s mashup energy, with smoke that plays well with bolder flavors. Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar B Que in New Braunfels is the pit style stop, the one that feels made for a road day. Burnt Bean Company in Seguin is the short detour that changes the whole weekend. Texas Monthly named it the No. 1 joint on its 2025 Top 50 list, and it has turned Seguin into a must stop. Texas Pride Barbecue in Adkins brings the dancehall edge, the kind of place where the hang matters as much as the plate.

Use the cards to pick your stops, then use the map to stitch them into a day, a weekend, or a full blown BBQ road trip. For a bigger loop, start with How to Plan the Ultimate Texas BBQ Road Trip.

The Game Plan

This is one of the easiest regions in Texas to eat well in a short window. You get big city depth in San Antonio, river town weekends in New Braunfels, and small town firepower in Seguin and the surrounding highways. It is close enough to do on a whim, but dense enough that you will leave with a second trip in mind. Go when the weather is good and the patios are busy.

One practical tip. Start early and keep your day to two main stops. Treat everything else as a bonus in case a line runs long or a pit sells out.
