I walked in the front door to a warm welcome from the staff! They briefly explained their menu and how to order, then described their sides to me.
The sliced brisket was amazing, super tender and moist. The jalapeño cheddar sausage had a great crispy exterior and was so flavorful!
Now, as important as the meat is in BBQ, I’m a firm believer that the sides can make or break the experience. Green Chili Hominy – just get it! It’s so different and has amazing complex flavors. The greens – y’all, I could eat these everyday! They’re easily the absolute best I have ever had!
BBQ sauce – definitely different but in a great way! Again, complex flavors but without overpowering the meats!
The price – with a beer, that was a $40 plate but as you can see from the last photo, it was entirely too much food for me for one meal! So I’ll gladly enjoy a second meal out of that!
Additionally, I read many other prior reviews, this place is not overpriced, the meat is weighed properly, the staff is not rude and the bathrooms are easily located through the door to the patio!
This BBQ joint is about average with most other BBQ joints in the metroplex. We live in an era where it’s hard to find bad BBQ.
Our party of four tried several different offerings:
*Sliced brisket sandwich
*589 sandwich
*Baked potato stuffed with chopped brisket
*Pinto beans
*Hatch Chili hominy
*Creamy cole slaw
*Potato salad
You have your choice of “lean” or “moist” when ordering a sliced brisket sandwich. I chose lean because I don’t like globs of fat. However, I was disappointed to see that my generous pile of LEAN brisket got dunked in what I believe was melted beef tallow. It did nothing for the flavor and made the sandwich taste really oily. The bun was covered in oil (tallow?)as well.
The 589 sandwich was a monstrosity and must be some kind of gimmicky item because it had a ridiculous amount of meat. Virtually impossible to eat as a sandwich without it simply falling apart. Using a knife and fork seems like you’re just eating a huge blob of meat. Not sure what the 589 sauce is, but my friend said it was good. I preferred their regular BBQ sauce.
Pinto beans were GREAT
Hatch chili hominy was GREAT
Creamy Cole slaw was GREAT
Potato salad was liked by no one and got thrown away. We all agreed that we preferred chunky mustard style potato salad, so that just a personal preference
The brisket has a very good black pepper bark and even the lean vas very tender…I just gotta remember to tell them not to dunk it in the beef tallow.

While driving through on our way to Phoenix, AZ, we stumbled upon 589 Hickory BBQ Co., and we’re so glad we did! This place is an absolute gem for anyone who loves authentic Texas barbecue. We went for the BBQ meat platter, and it exceeded all expectations. The brisket was incredibly tender and juicy, practically melting in our mouths, and the jalapeño sausage had just the right amount of kick—absolutely perfect.
But it wasn’t just the food that impressed us. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with a true family-style vibe. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel at home, taking the time to chat with us and ensure we had everything we needed. The service was top-notch, friendly, and full of Texas charm.
It’s not often you find a place where both the food and the people are equally amazing, but 589 Hickory BBQ Co. nailed it. We’ll definitely make this a regular stop on future trips—can’t wait to come back for more! Highly recommend for anyone looking for a true Texas BBQ experience.
